Knowledge Drop | Wakame (Seaweed) is one of the only sources of what essential mineral? Hint: It's most important for pregnant and breastfeeding women!
Iodine! The top two sources of iodine in the western diet are iodized salt and dairy products (because an iodine solution is used to clean the cow’s udders, so a little iodine ends up in the cow’s milk). Given that we want to reduce salt intake and are better off avoiding dairy, we need to consider other sources in our diet. That said, regular consumption of seaweed or kelp granules (which can be purchased and sprinkled onto food) is our best plant-based option!
Iodine plays a vital role in thyroid health – your thyroid gland (located at the base of the front of your neck) helps regulate hormone production, and hormones control your metabolism, growth and development, sexual function, reproduction and mood. Women need more iodine during pregnancy and breastfeeding because it's vital for brain development in fetuses and babies.
So – throw your hands up for this HiiiPower-packed raw veggie + wakame pad thai, knowing that its powerful iodine properties are giving you (and any future little yous!) what your body and brain needs to thrive.
